Jominy Testing
Key to any steel mill or forge is the ability to quickly and accurately test the hardenability of steel or steel alloy. Titan Metallurgy offers quick and accurate Jominy testing services performed by degreed metallurgists.
Jominy testing is the standard method for measuring the hardenability of steels. Hardenability is a metal’s capability to be hardened by heat treatment and differs from sample to sample depending on the chemical composition of the sample material. A Jominy end quench test is an important test for steel mills and forgers. This test enables optimal alloy selection in order to achieve the desired hardness at a given cross-section in a component.
Jominy Testing Process
The Jominy End Quench hardenability test has five operations:
- Normalizing: To homogenize alloy distribution and minimize elemental segregation
- Machining: Jominy specimen is machined to dimensions specified by ASTM A255 or ISO 642
- Heating and end quenching: The jominy specimen is austenitized at a temperature given in the relevant specification. Then one end is quickly cooled with water until the jominy specimen reaches room temperature.
- Grinding parallel flats: The specimen is ground flat to a given in the relevant specification. This grinding removes the surface layer and provides a flat surface for hardness testing.
- Hardness testing: The hardness is measured at specified intervals from the quenched end.
The results of the jominy end quench test is a curve called the jominy curve which dictates the material’s hardenability. This allows steel mills and forges to certify a material’s ability to properly harden when heat treated per a given chemical composition and structure.
Benefits of Jominy Testing
Knowledge of the jominy curve allows designers and engineers to select the optimum alloy for an application. Materials with larger section sizes require alloys with more hardenability in order to achieve a satisfactory heat treat response. The jominy test predicts the heat treat response and ensures predictable and repeatable results.
